Mexico City Pilgrimage destinations

Mexico City Pilgrimage - Zocalo

The Cathedral is located in the city center square called the Zocalo

The Zocalo is a massive concrete area signed with a giant flag. The former the Merchants' arcade on the west side has cafés and even a traditional hat shop!

Inside the underground Zocalo station you will find excellent historical reproductions of the Square.Artifacts unearthed from the ruins of this double Mexica temple can be seen in the Templo Mayor and in its adjacent museum.

To the East side of the plaza stands the National Palace, a group of buildings erected as the seat of civil power from the days of the Viceroyalty until the present. Its interior has several patios, corridors, and stairways graced by impressive murals by Diego Rivera whose symbolism depicts, in great detail, key episodes of Mexico's history.

Mexico City Cathedral
Pilgrimage to Mexico City -

The Cathedral and its Vestry

Through its imposing sun-bathed baroque and neoclassical facade the visitor enters the ethereal half-light of this Holy site, with its five separate naves, its chapels and its religious paintings. The Altars are all outstanding. The religious ceremonies are performed with the full dignity of the Catholic faith, choirs and organs. The City's soft clay subsoil, excessive water exploitation, has propitiated the gradual sinking of many buildings such as the Cathedral. Restoration works, partially visible, have prevented its collapse.

Inside the Cathedral is an side Altar with a Blackened Christ with bent legs. This is due to aMiracle in which this Crucifix saved the life of an Archbishop.

Pilgrimage to Mexico City - Shrine of Miguel Pro

The Shrine of Blessed Miguel Pro is in the beautiful Jesuit Church of the Holy Family in Colonia Roma, D.F. (Mexico City).

After the ritual exhumation during the Beatification process in 1988, Father Pro's relics were reserved in a small chapel in this church until November of 1997 when they were translated into the main sanctuary in order to make them more accessible for veneration by the faithful.]

Visitors to the shrine may also wish to visit nearby Buena Prensa, the Jesuit publishing group, which has a small collection of items concerning Blessed Miguel Pro.
