Catholic Pilgrimage tradition and history For Catholics, going on a Pilgrimage goes back to the early days of the Church. The four historic traditional Pilgrimage sites were: 1. Santiago de Compestela or the Way of Saint James in Spain 2. The Cave of Saint Michael the Archangel in Italy 3. Rome and the Vatican 4. Holy Land Other sites have become famous as Catholic Pilgrimage sites like the Our Lady of Loreto and the Holy House in Italy and Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica in Mexico City to name just two of the many. And in more recent times Lourdes and Fatima have become part of our Catholic Pilgrimage tradition. There certainly is no shortage of places to Pilgrimage to. Saints have visited these sites also. Examples: Saint Therese of Lisieux visited the Holy House Saint Bridget of Sweden visited the Cave of Saint Michael Blessed Miguel Pro visited Lourdes Saint Rita of Cascia visited Rome and the list goes on and on Going on to Shrines is just another facet of Catholic Pilgrimage tradition.
